Food scrap collection is open now at the Eastside Farmers’ Market for the 2024 market season. Southside Farmers’ Market starts May 21\, 2024. \nAccording to the Wisconsin DNR\, our landfills consist of 14.5% food that would be traditionally edible\, and 6% “food scraps” (like peels). This makes food the largest component of our waste stream. Bringing your food scraps to market collection sites is one way to positively impact the environment. The land and soil\, community members\, and agricultural system as a whole benefit from the nutrient recycling and food waste reduction of food scraps collection and composting. \nCheck out The City of Madison’s Plan. Experienced volunteer educators and guides will facilitate a short hike to learn about nature and explore the grounds and trails. This free event is open to members of Holy Wisdom communities and the general public. \n2024 Dates (please register below)\n\nApril 14 – Signs of Spring. We will look for signs of emergent plants\, animals and insects. Depending on the weather\, we may find nectar sources for emerging bumble bees. Weather permitting\, we will explore the Lost Lake area where we may hear frogs calling.\nMay 19 – Birds & Binoculars. Kids and adults are invited to look at the world through binoculars. What birds can we see? Our team experts will teach about Eastern Bluebirds and Sandhill Cranes.\nJune 23 – Butterflies & Berries. We will search the prairie for butterflies. Our monarch expert will show us some monarch eggs. We will use magnifiers to find interesting insects on prairie plants. Then we’ll explore the woods to find seasonal berries and learn who eats them.\nAugust 11 – Lost Lake Critters. Who lives in the lake? Take a look at the tiny critters that feed all the residents of Lost Lake. Observe the painted turtles and explore the trails around the lake for signs of other creatures.\nSeptember 8 – Seed Collecting. Seeds hold all of life. Take a seed stroll through the prairie. Then collect seeds of some native prairie plants and learn how to plant them. Every family will take home seeds from two species.\nOctober 13 – Trees in Fall. Trees are more than their leaves. Walk through the savanna and the woods exploring bark\, nuts\, lichens and more. Look for animal homes. Make a leaf rubbing. Take photos.\nNovember 10 – Creatures in Winter Family Game. Come for the end of season party. We’ll start with a short hike and then warm up with a bonfire\, hot chocolate and a fun interactive game for the whole family. DESCRIPTION:Kids on the Prairie\nExplore nature’s beauty and surprises!\nKids on the Prairie is for children and their adult family members. Experienced volunteer educators and guides will facilitate a short hike to learn about nature and explore the grounds and trails. This free event is open to members of Holy Wisdom communities and the general public. \n2024 Dates (please register below)\n\nApril 14 – Signs of Spring. We will look for signs of emergent plants\, animals and insects. Depending on the weather\, we may find nectar sources for emerging bumble bees. Weather permitting\, we will explore the Lost Lake area where we may hear frogs calling.\nMay 19 – Birds & Binoculars. Kids and adults are invited to look at the world through binoculars. What birds can we see? Our team experts will teach about Eastern Bluebirds and Sandhill Cranes.\nJune 23 – Butterflies & Berries. We will search the prairie for butterflies. Our monarch expert will show us some monarch eggs. We will use magnifiers to find interesting insects on prairie plants. Then we’ll explore the woods to find seasonal berries and learn who eats them.\nAugust 11 – Lost Lake Critters. Who lives in the lake? Take a look at the tiny critters that feed all the residents of Lost Lake. Observe the painted turtles and explore the trails around the lake for signs of other creatures.\nSeptember 8 – Seed Collecting. Seeds hold all of life. Take a seed stroll through the prairie. Then collect seeds of some native prairie plants and learn how to plant them. Every family will take home seeds from two species.\nOctober 13 – Trees in Fall. Trees are more than their leaves. Walk through the savanna and the woods exploring bark\, nuts\, lichens and more. Look for animal homes. Make a leaf rubbing. Take photos.\nNovember 10 – Creatures in Winter Family Game. Come for the end of season party. We’ll start with a short hike and then warm up with a bonfire\, hot chocolate and a fun interactive game for the whole family. DESCRIPTION:Since 1990\, the Friends of the Arboretum Native Plant Sale in early May has provided local gardeners with a reliable source for native plants and expert guidance. All species offered at the sale are native to Wisconsin and\, once established\, require minimal care. No plants are dug from the wild. All are grown in commercial nurseries that follow best practices for preventing spread of disease and pests such as the jumping worm. \nThe plant sale is open to all. DESCRIPTION:Our popular recycling program is back for 2024\, this time with an in person date.\n\n\nBecome a recycling steward with our award-winning program in partnership with the City of Madison. Learn the ins and outs of our local recycling system and get your recycling questions answered. The program will give you the tools you need to teach your family\, neighbors\, friends\, and coworkers how to improve recycling and community sustainability. \nTopics include: what makes recycling work and why we do it\, local recycling basics\, barriers to recycling\, other waste streams\, low-waste living\, & how to champion recycling in your community. \nWe’ll meet in person on Friday\, May 17 from 8:30 AM—12:00 PM. If you can’t attend this session\, we will have a virtual session in two parts on the evenings of July 11 and 18. That session will also be recorded. Register for that session here. \nCertified Recycling Stewards will attend both sessions and complete an outreach project\, bringing the recycling knowledge they gain to their communities. Outreach can look like teaching what you learn to another group of friends\, colleagues\, or community members\, or completing a project like setting up a recycling info station at your workplace. Certified Recycling Stewards will be recognized at Sustain Dane’s annual Summit. \nTickets cost $15\, or are free for Sustain Dane members. DESCRIPTION:Farmers’ Market Food Scrap Drop-off\nSustain Dane aims to make food scrap collection more accessible to community members in Madison\, WI. In the summer of 2022 we began coordinating education\, food scrap collection\, and food waste hauling to Neighborhood Food Solutions’ nearby urban farm. Food scrap collection is open now at the Eastside Farmers’ Market for the 2024 market season. Southside Farmers’ Market starts May 21\, 2024. \nAccording to the Wisconsin DNR\, our landfills consist of 14.5% food that would be traditionally edible\, and 6% “food scraps” (like peels). This makes food the largest component of our waste stream. Bringing your food scraps to market collection sites is one way to positively impact the environment. The land and soil\, community members\, and agricultural system as a whole benefit from the nutrient recycling and food waste reduction of food scraps collection and composting. \nCheck out The City of Madison’s Plan. Bob\, with support from WKOW\, often mentions climate change during his broadcast and is a frequent public speaker on the topic. \nBob earned his B.S. Degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1979. He started his career in 1980 at Weather Central\, a weather consulting firm based in Madison. While at Weather Central\, Bob observed the debut of the first television graphics system based on an Apple personal computer. Over the years at Weather Central he would witness the rapid development of new generations of graphics systems that revolutionized the television broadcast industry. \nWeather Central also provided broadcast services to WKOW-TV in Madison. Through the 1980s\, Bob presented weathercasts in the mornings and weekends. He was awarded the American Meteorological Society Broadcast Seal of Approval in 1987\, and then became the Chief Meteorologist at WKOW-TV in 1989\, a position he has held ever since. Bob produces and presents the weathercasts on the 5\, 6\, and 10 PM newscasts\, Monday through Friday. \nBob believes strongly in climate change education\, and has given numerous presentations to school\, civic\, and faith-based groups. He is a member of Citizen’s Climate Lobby\, a non-profit and non-partisan organization focused on national policies to address climate change. Bob is married and has three children and two grandchildren.

Let’s celebrate water\, explore solutions\, and stay informed about the science and research related to our Northwoods and treasured lakes. \n\nWater Quality\nWake Boats\nHabitats\nInvasive Species\nPartnerships\n\nRegistration opens at 7:30 AM followed by an optional morning bog hike on Statehouse Lake led by Licia Johnson\, Naturalist and Education Director. Coffee and light breakfast included\, followed by opening comments and sessions beginning at 9:00 AM. \nLunch and refreshments included. Last lecture session ends at 3:30 PM. Following the last session\, optional workshops such as underwater remote operated vehicles or a historical YCC tour led will be offered. \nEnd the day with a Social in the Main Lodge to converse about all the new opportunities we have unfolded. DESCRIPTION:Engage with the community in this Climate Circle led by coach Sharon Barbour.\n\n\nJoin us for a special event facilitated by professional coach Sharon Barbour\, MPH\, PCC. Sharon will lead participants in a Climate Circle – a safe\, courageous\, and kind space to share one’s climate-related thoughts and feelings in a coach-approach environment. \nClimate Circles help participants build community and resiliency while shifting toward more engagement with the climate. \nSharon has worked with hundreds of clients within the nonprofit\, government\, academic\, and private sectors. She is a senior faculty member for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Certified Professional Coach Program and is on faculty with Presence-Based Coaching and Leadership Development.
